Design Parameters: A facility that is flexible and able to handle a wide variety of waste is especially important in a developing market. Frequently the client knows what types of waste were being generated currently but can not be certain of what type of wastes will become available in the future. Similarly the major generators and the environmental agencies see the value in a facility that can handle a variety of wastes beyond what was currently being generated. However, no client wants to build a large and complex facility that may not be fully utilized for years.
GCI provided a process design based on our 50+ years of accumulated experience in waste management facility operation that addressed these criteria and achieved a balance between the conflicting desires of accepting a wide range of waste and a moderately priced facility.
This process design includes the sizing and routing of piping, the configuration of all tanks, the specification of any pumps, mixers, grinders, strainers, instruments and any specialized equipment such as vent scrubbers or drop-out boxes. Also included is a site layout, the placement of the loading / unloading areas, tank farms and process areas, configured to the size and shape of the site.
Design / Build: GCI recommends that the client select a local engineering firm to convert the process design into construction drawings and execute the construction. GCI would continue to provide process design oversight to ensure that the process design was not compromised. The local engineering firm would in turn ensure that the local regulations were met and provide equipment manufacturer recommendation based on local availability and post-sale support. This interaction between GCI and the local engineering firm provides the engineering firm with a better understanding of the process design. All of this provides the client with superior service.
Facility Operations: Obviously a process design is useless without an operations plan. GCI is composed of people who have actually operated waste management facilities so we know the importance of planning and training. GCI will provide an operations plan and personal instruction of operators.
Laboratory Design, Equipment Specification and Procedures: GCI personnel have been involved with hazardous waste fuel anlysis since the early days of its use in cement kilns in the US. Indeed our people have developed methods and techniques that have since become standard procedures in the industry. Consequently GCI can provide our clients with a lab design and equipment specs based on our extensive experience. In addition we provide a manual of standard laboratory procedures tailored to the client's equipment and analytical requirements. GCI can also supply training to the client's technicians. Such training in analyzing waste materials is key to the lab quickly becoming efficient and effective and will prove invaluble in the future.
Selecting a Cement or Lime Kiln: The physical and chemical characteristics of the waste fuel that a particular cement kiln can utilize may be impossible or uneconomical to produce. Or more simply: Only certain cement or lime kilns can effectively utilize waste fuels. The limiting criteria are generally tied to kiln production chemistry. This is a specialized knowledge which only GCI can claim expertise. GCI's staff includes chemists and a chemical engineer who have accumulated a vast store of knowledge in cement chemistry and how it is affected by alternate fuels and raw materials. GCI is a recognised expert in this field. GCI can conduct a survey of cement and lime kilns in your locality and select a kiln which is a good candidate to utilize waste fuels.
Burning the Waste Fuel at a Kiln: GCI can provide a cement or lime kiln with a waste fuel storage and firing system design. GCI can also provide startup and operations instruction when this system is brought on line .
Solid Wastes: Generally a small amount of solid waste can be handled by fairly small shredders or grinders. However as the market matures the relative quantities of liquid wastes will decrease or possess higher concentrations of solids. Also the volume of waste solids will increase either due to increased regulation or generation by industry, most probably both. GCI can assist you in developing designs for processing and handling high solid waste fuels and alternative raw materials.
GCI provides our clients with on-going services. Few clients can hire employees from a pool of experienced waste management people, this is a fledgling industry in many countries and no such pool exists. Consequently this experience must be acquired as our client provides it's services. This can and does lead to problems and inefficiencies which can be quite costly to a new venture. As stated previously GCI's people have been facility operators we can provide answers and quidance for most of these new situations. Also as the regulations change our clients must change as well. While this may require increased costs in equipment and more stringent procedures these changes also provide opportunities for increased business. Here GCI will provide expertise to solve these problems and point out potential opportunities.
